Texas Receives Unfortunate News on Monday Morning

Texas football secondary coach Terry Joseph is  hired by the NFL’s New Orleans Saints, multiple reports have confirmed. It will be the first time Joseph has coached in the NFL.

Secondary coach Terry Joseph becomes Texas football’s second assistant coach to leave for an NFL job in the past month this February Orangebloods’ Anwar Richardson was the first to report the news that the Saints have hired Joseph to join their coaching staff in the NFL.

This news comes after the Longhorns lost two other assistant coaches early this offseason, including running backs coach Tashard Choice (hired by the Detroit Lions) and safeties coach Blake Gideon (hired by the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets).

The Longhorns hired former West Virginia Mountaineers running backs coach Chad Scott to replace Choice as the next RB coach and former Rutgers Scarlet Knights’ secondary coach Mark Orphey to replace Gideon with the defensive staff this offseason.

Joseph had served as Texas’s cornerbacks coach since the 2021 season. But he moved to coaching safeties early this offseason after the departure of Gideon to become Georgia Tech’s defensive coordinator in the ACC. Joseph also was named the defensive pass-game coordinator early this offseason.

The New Orleans, LA, native Joseph has also held college coaching jobs with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, North Carolina Tar Heels, Tennessee Volunteers, LSU Tigers, and Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Texas’s secondary had an outstanding year in the 2024 season. Joseph coached up the 2024 Jim Thorpe Award winner, senior All-American cornerback Jahdae Barron. Texas led the SEC in pass defense this past season, allowing just 165.6 passing yards per game and 1.3 passing touchdowns.

Joseph has been a key recruiter for head coach Steve Sarkisian’s staff since the 2021 offseason. He’s recruited key defensive backs to the Longhorns in the past few years, including safety Derek Williams Jr., cornerback Malik Muhammad, cornerback Kobe Black, and nickel Jaylon Guilbeau, among many others.

He also played a big role in the recruitment of quarterback Arch Manning for the Longhorns, given his connections in the state of Louisiana on the recruiting trail.

This departure means yet another coaching search for Sarkisian and the Longhorns to take on to fill a big void on the staff this offseason.
