The Texas Longhorns’ offense faced a significant setback on Tuesday when starting running back CJ Baxter sustained a knee injury during practice.
Anwar Richardson from Yahoo Sports reported on Wednesday that Baxter has torn both his PCL and LCL and is expected to undergo surgery, with a recovery timeline of six to nine months. As a result, the sophomore running back will miss the entire 2024 season.
Baxter had a strong showing in 2023 as a true freshman, quickly rising up the depth chart. In 13 games, he recorded 138 carries for 659 yards and five touchdowns, along with 24 receptions for 156 yards. He was anticipated to play a key role in coach Steve Sarkisian’s offensive plans.
In Baxter’s absence, junior Jaydon Blue and sophomore Quintrevion Wisner will compete for the starting position in the backfield. Last year, Blue had 65 carries for 398 yards and three touchdowns, while Wisner scored one touchdown on 12 carries for 73 yards during his freshman season.
With the Longhorns transitioning to the SEC and set to face tough defenses, Baxter’s absence will be notably impactful for the team.
