Texas Longhorns RB Jaydon Blue Brings This One-Word Quality to the Dallas Cowboys
With seasoned backs like Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders already on the roster, the Dallas Cowboys recognized the need to inject some youth into their running back group—beyond just backup and special teams contributor Deuce Vaughn.

That’s why, with the 149th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, team owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ front office selected Texas Longhorns running back Jaydon Blue. The pick gave Cowboys fans a reason to breathe a little easier, knowing that speed and agility were once again part of the offensive arsenal.
But if you ask Blue himself, he’d say he offers more than just athleticism to “America’s Team.”Blue has been impressive throughout rookie camp under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. In a recent conversation with Spectrum News, the rookie summed up his potential impact on the Cowboys in a single word: versatility.

“When people ask me what I bring to a team, the word I always use is versatility,” said the former Longhorn. “That’s because I know I can do more than just carry the ball—I can catch out of the backfield, too. I don’t focus much on traditional running back drills when I train, since those skills come naturally to me. Instead, I work on receiver techniques—like footwork, release moves, and catching passes downfield.”
Blue backed up those words with a standout final season at Texas in 2024, racking up 730 rushing yards, 368 receiving yards, and 14 total touchdowns.
The Harris County native also brings elite speed to the field. Despite nursing a groin injury, he clocked an impressive 4.38-second 40-yard dash. His burst was on full display in the 2024 College Football Playoff, especially in the opening round against Clemson, where he racked up 146 rushing yards—including touchdown runs of 38 and 77 yards—the latter sealing Texas’ 38–24 victory.
Although Blue currently sits behind veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders on the Cowboys’ depth chart, their injury histories may open the door for him to earn significant playing time—something Texas fans have been eagerly anticipating.
