Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian celebrates with his team after a...

When Steve Sarkisian took over in Austin in 2021, he inherited more than just a football roster — he stepped into what he described as an “entitled” environment. While some players wore the Longhorn uniform, they lacked the discipline and competitive drive essential for success.

Sarkisian wasted no time in transforming the program, emphasizing toughness, accountability, and the importance of earning success. As the Longhorns gear up for the 2025 season, that cultural shift has propelled them to the No. 1 spot in the nation.

Sarkisian didn’t hold back in a frank interview, stating:

“We had players who thought just wearing the Longhorn logo meant they were successful. There was a real sense of entitlement. Too many had the mindset of ‘I’m already good enough,’ even when they weren’t.”

He wasn’t willing to tolerate that attitude. Instead, he demanded toughness and a hunger for growth, saying, “I want guys who want greatness—even if they don’t yet understand what it takes to get there.”

Wide receiver Jordan Whittington was one of those who thrived under the new standard. He noted:

“When someone pushes you like that and your mindset is in the right place, you use it as fuel.”

The cultural overhaul paid off quickly. Texas has increased its win total each season under Sarkisian, ultimately reaching back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinal appearances.

Now, Texas is aiming higher.

“We want to be the team that breaks through,” Sarkisian said. With elite talent like Arch Manning, a roster built to contend, and a hardened mentality, the Longhorns believe their moment has arrived.

The question now isn’t whether Texas will win it all — it’s when. With a high-stakes Week 1 matchup against playoff rival Ohio State on the horizon and a foundation rooted in accountability, Sarkisian has taken the program past its cultural transformation. Texas is no longer just rebuilding — it’s a fully powered championship contender.
