Texans Receive Huge Update on Relocation Plans

The Houston Texans and their 23-year residency at NRG Stadium could be nearing an end.

With the hiring of new president Mike Tomon, a relocation within the city of Houston is trending per the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander and Dylan McGuinness.

But it won’t be an existing venue; the Texans are reportedly looking to build a new stadium entirely. The team hasn’t committed to that avenue as of yet, however.

Ownership is still in the infancy stages of talks about relocating and the decision won’t be only up to the Texans. The Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo along with Harris County also play a role in what will make the most financial sense for the franchise, which includes what renovation costs for NRG Stadium project to be.

The report estimates that upgrading the nearly 30-year-old stadium could cost as much as $1.4 billion. If the team aims to enhance premium amenities, constructing a new venue with public funding may be a more practical option.

“Our priority has always been to support a renovation of NRG Stadium and that’s where our focus remains,” Texans spokesperson Omar Majzoub said in a statement to the Chronicle. “As we’ve said before, we are committed to exploring all potential solutions to ensure long-term success and we look forward to working with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Harris County and HSCCC (the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp.) in identifying the best path forward.”

While plans for a new stadium are still in the early stages and construction wouldn’t begin for years, the Texans are focused on staying ahead and delivering the best possible experience for their fans.
