Nebraska football could be preparing for not one but two big departures on the defensive side of the ball.
This was supposed to be the fun part of the Nebraska football season. Husker fans would get to spend the next few weeks talking about where NU was going for its bowl season while the team got in the extra practices and prepared to be even better for the 2025 campaign.
As it turns out, we really can’t have nice things. Just three days after the Huskers lost in heartbreaking and frustrating fashion, the fanbase got a gut punch in the news that Tony White was most likely leaving for a lateral move at Florida State. That was bad enough. That was “what’s going on here?” bad. And then the haymaker. The knockout punch.
New reports not only say that White is definitely gone, but he’s taking one of his best assistants with him. The new report from Rivals says that Terrance Knighton will follow White in what would also seemingly be a lateral move.
Nebraska football losing the two guys it never wanted to lose
The real pain of this 1-2 punch won’t just be felt on the coaching side, but especially with Knighton, it will be felt in recruiting. And of course, there’s the issue of now having to go out and replace two staffers that didn’t seem like they had a foot out the door.
There’s also the issue of both leaving before the Huskers’ bowl game. All that talk about extra practices and prep on the defensive side of the ball goes out the window, assuming head coach Matt Rhule didn’t know about this for a while and already have replacements in mind.
And of course, the biggest “what the heck” part of all of this is two guys leaving the Nebraska football program without apparent promotions. It’s possible that Florida State was able to throw more money at them than NU could, though that would raise some serious questions. This seems more like a move because they see a Florida State program with a head coach squarely on the hotseat as a better job. That should concern everyone in and around the state.
