Breaking: Former Penn State QB star signing with Washington Commanders

Trace McSorley Signs with Washington Commanders After Sam Hartman Injury.

Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley has found a new NFL opportunity with the Washington Commanders. The move comes after Commanders quarterback Sam Hartman suffered a shoulder injury, opening up a roster spot for McSorley ahead of Saturday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.

McSorley, who was a standout at Penn State from 2015-2018, holds numerous school records including most passing yards in a single season, most passing touchdowns in a single season, and most career total yards of offense. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 6th round of the 2019 NFL Draft and has spent time with several teams since then, including the Arizona Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New England Patriots.

The 28-year-old McSorley has appeared in 9 NFL games over his career, completing 48 passes for 502 yards with 1 touchdown and 5 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 79 yards on 21 attempts.

Despite the nomadic nature of his professional career so far, McSorley remains optimistic about his NFL future. When speaking at a recent Penn State event, he said “Still staying in shape, still, obviously, hoping to get a chance to play. We’ve had some conversations with a couple of teams, gotta let some things play out and kind of see how it goes.”

Now with the Commanders, McSorley will look to make the most of this latest opportunity to prove he belongs in the NFL. If he can impress in the preseason, he may be able to stick on the Commanders’ roster or practice squad to start the regular season. For a player who has had to bounce around, any chance to show his skills is a welcome one.

The news was initially reported by Grant Paulson and later confirmed by other sources.

With this signing, the Washington Commanders become McSorley’s sixth NFL team. He has previously played for the Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

McSorley will reunite with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who coached him during his time with the Cardinals.

Throughout his NFL career, McSorley has accumulated a total of 502 passing yards and one touchdown.
