JUST IN: Forest Green former star striker “SIGNS” for league two side

AFC Wimbledon sign released Forest Green striker

Mathew Stevens, a free agent from Forest Green, has signed with AFC Wimbledon.

The 26-year-old left The Green Devils when they were relegated to the National League, making him a free agent.

Stevens and Plough Lane have agreed to a two-year contract.

Stevens was a target for the Dons in the January transfer window of the 2022–2023 campaign, but the former Barnet striker signed a loan with Walsall.

In 37 League Two appearances during the 2021–22 campaign, Stevens scored 23 goals, helping Forest Green earn promotion to League One.

“I’m over the moon; every player’s dream is to get a deal done nice and quick,” he stated on the club website. I’m excited to concentrate on the upcoming work.

“For me, this is a major step. This club is enormous; its support system and background speak for themselves. The location and the manager were quite appealing. It’s appropriate for me to visit at this moment. I was informed about the play style, and I absolutely love it. I’m sure I can score a lot of goals here as long as I can fulfill my duties off the ball.

Johnnie Jackson, the Dons’ manager, stated: “We’re thrilled to finish this one so early.” Matty has demonstrated his ability to score goals at this level and has also been promoted. Despite having a wealth of expertise, he is still in a good enough age to wish to advance in his work.

“You could sense his excitement and want to be involved in what we’re doing here the moment I met him a few weeks ago. I’m sure he wanted to visit this location as soon as he learned of our interest. He works really hard and is willing to sacrifice everything for the cause.

Craig Cope, head of football operations, stated: “We are thrilled to have Matty and his family visit Wimbledon. Matty showed a genuine desire to join the Club, and we think his qualities are a good fit.
