Stampeders remain winless on the road after loss to Argos (& nine other thoughts)

Just a week ago, the Calgary Stampeders were riding high after pulling off an incredible 21-point comeback against the Toronto Argonauts, securing their fourth win of the season. The excitement from that victory seemed to carry over into their rematch at BMO Field, where they headed into halftime with a 15-8 lead. However, the second half told a different story, as the Stampeders fell apart and ended up losing 39-25. This defeat marked their fifth consecutive loss on the road this season, leaving them winless away from Calgary.

A Closer Look at the Stats

At first glance, the statistics from the game might leave you scratching your head. The Stampeders outgained the Argonauts significantly, racking up 442 yards compared to Toronto’s 289. Calgary’s quarterback, Jake Maier, had an impressive game, completing 33 of 45 passes for 373 yards, including a touchdown. In contrast, Toronto’s Nick Arbuckle managed only 181 yards on 18 completions. Calgary also dominated possession, holding the ball for 34 minutes compared to Toronto’s 26.

Despite these numbers, the Stampeders couldn’t capitalize on their offensive advantages. Three critical moments in the game shifted the momentum away from Calgary and prevented them from securing a second consecutive win.

Janarion Grant’s Magic

If you’re a fan of special teams, you’ve likely heard the name Janarion Grant. He made headlines once again with an electrifying 86-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter. This was his fourth return touchdown of the season and the 12th of his career, solidifying his place as one of the league’s top return specialists. Grant now ranks third all-time for punt return touchdowns, showcasing just how crucial he is to Toronto’s success.

Jake Maier’s Tough Breaks

While Maier has been consistent this season, with a low interception percentage of just 2.3%, he threw two critical interceptions during this game. One of those was a devastating pick-six by former Stampeder DaShaun Amos, which allowed Toronto to take the lead late in the game. Maier’s typically candid demeanor was noticeably subdued when discussing the interceptions, as he acknowledged that such mistakes “just can’t happen.”

Despite his impressive statistics, including ranking third in total yardage among quarterbacks this season, there seems to be something off with the Stampeders’ offense. Perhaps it’s the legacy of past legendary quarterbacks that raises expectations, but something feels amiss.

Controversial Calls

As if the game needed more drama, officiating decisions added to the tension. A potential touchdown by Cameron Judge was wiped off the board after a controversial ruling, which left Stampeders’ head coach Dave Dickenson visibly frustrated. The officiating crew also penalized Calgary in a crucial moment, impacting their field position and ultimately leading to an Argos field goal.

These calls have sparked widespread criticism of the CFL’s officiating this season, and this game was no exception. If the Stampeders had received the same treatment as the Argonauts, the dynamics of the game could have shifted dramatically.

Looking Ahead

With this loss, the Stampeders are left to regroup as they prepare for their next matchup against the Ottawa REDBLACKS on August 15. Meanwhile, the Argonauts will enjoy a bye week before returning to action against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on August 22. The road ahead is crucial for both teams as they navigate the remainder of the season.

Reggie Begelton often flies under the radar in conversations about the league’s top receivers, but a standout play in the fourth quarter served as a reminder of his talent.

During the game, Begelton caught a pass at the Argonauts’ 32-yard line, evading several defenders as he charged upfield. He was eventually grabbed by Toronto’s Robert Priester at the 20-yard line, but Begelton carried him along for the ride. Former teammates Fraser Sopik, DeShaun Amos, and Royce Metchie all attempted to bring him down, with Sopik making contact at the 10, Amos at the seven, and Metchie diving at his legs at the five. Ultimately, Begelton was stopped just two yards short of the end zone. Had he scored, it would have been one of the most impressive touchdowns in recent memory. He finished the game with 104 yards on eight receptions out of 13 targets.

A Missed Opportunity for Paredes

In a surprising turn of events, Rene Paredes, who had kicked 25 consecutive field goals without a miss this season, saw his streak come to an end. Just as TSN’s Marshall Ferguson was discussing Paredes’ impressive record, he attempted a 35-yard field goal that hit the right upright. The flags atop the uprights were blowing straight to the right, clearly showing the ball curving off course. Ferguson mistakenly noted that this was the “fourth longest streak in history,” which likely contributed to the miss.

For the record, Paredes does hold the fourth-longest streak, having made 32 consecutive field goals in 2016. He has achieved four streaks of 25 or more successful kicks throughout his career. The only other kicker to have done this more than once is Sean Whyte, who has hit exactly 25 on two occasions and is currently on a streak of 42 in a row, second only to Ottawa’s Lewis Ward, who famously hit 69 consecutive attempts after missing his first.

Tommy Stevens Faces a Setback

In a classic case of the announcer’s jinx, Tommy Stevens was tackled for a loss in a third-and-short situation shortly after it was mentioned that he had been perfect this season. He was brought down from behind in what appeared to be a horsecollar tackle, but much to the Stampeders’ dismay, no penalty was called, resulting in a turnover deep in their territory.

Despite this setback, Stevens did manage to score a rushing touchdown during the game, receiving the ball from Jake Maier. This play was particularly necessary given that the Stampeders were short on running backs and lacked a fullback on their roster.

Overall, it was a game filled with standout moments and missed opportunities, showcasing the unpredictable nature of football.
