It’s no secret that Ryan Day, the head coach of Ohio State, is about to embark on a major season. In the event that things don’t go as planned—that is, if they don’t defeat Michigan and come within a whisker of winning a National Championship—he might have to coach in the championship game.
As he prepares for his sixth season as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, many supporters are unsure of how to feel about Ryan Day. He has watched three college football playoffs and one championship game in the five years he has been on the sidelines in Columbus, but he has only managed to defeat Michigan three times and defeat his fiercest foe, Michigan, once.
This season, Ohio State needs to defeat Michigan, and they have no justification for not doing so. The majority of the Wolverines’ roster, including head coach Jim Harbaugh and starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy, was lost to the NFL. Although Michigan still has several excellent players, they won’t be the same squad as they were the previous three seasons. This season’s Buckeye squad is likely the greatest that the team has had in a long time.
This season, Ryan Day is also forming new friendships in the Big Ten at UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington. Oregon, led by head coach Dan Lanning, is one of those clubs to keep an eye on. Day cannot allow Ohio State to defeat his team and then dominate the Big Ten since the Ducks are becoming a formidable team and they will be hosting them this season.
Day is under a lot of pressure this season because, according to Jesse Simonton of On3.com, he is the best coach in the Big Ten Coaching Pressure Rankings.
Day is under tremendous pressure, according to Simonton, and here is what he has to say about the head coach of the Buckeyes.
Severe? For a 56-8 head coach? Yes. After losing to Michigan three times in a row and witnessing their rival Team Up North win the title in 2023, Day is under special pressure.
Ohio State has put everything on the line for this season, bringing back nearly a dozen starters with NFL futures and loading up on some of the best transfers in the portal. Day will be under intense pressure to win the Big Ten title and more with this team if he can’t deliver it. Day is giving up play-calling responsibilities and adopting a more CEO-like position in his post as head coach.
It might seem unfeasible for a head coach with fewer than ten career losses to lose to Michigan again, but it could cost him his job.
