Spartans Announce Captains for 2025 Season
Michigan State head football coach Jonathan Smith has announced the team captains for the 2025 season.
The five captains – junior quarterback Aidan Chiles, graduate senior defensive lineman Quindarius Dunnigan, graduate senior linebacker Sam Edwards, graduate senior offensive lineman Matt Gulbin and junior linebacker Jordan Hall – were voted by their teammates.
Chiles becomes the first Spartan to be voted a captain in consecutive seasons since Xavier Henderson and Payton Thorne in 2021-22. Chiles was voted a captain as a true sophomore in his first season at MSU in 2024 and started all 12 games at quarterback. He completed 59 percent of his passes (192-of-323) for 2,415 yards and 13 touchdowns and ranked ninth in the Big Ten in total offense (220.0 ypg).
Dunnigan is also in his second season at Michigan State after transferring from Middle Tennessee State in 2024. He received a seventh season of eligibility in 2025 from the NCAA and has played in 44 collegiate games, including 13 starts, and has collected 85 tackles, 21 TFLs and 6.5 sacks in his career. He had 17 tackles and four TFLs in 11 games last season.
A four-year letterwinner who has played in 29 career games at MSU, Edwards is in his sixth season with the Spartans. He has excelled in the classroom throughout his entire Spartan career and has provided leadership for the program both on and off the field. The Williamston, Michigan, native and Lansing Catholic product earned Academic All-District honors for the second consecutive season in 2024, and was on the final ballot for the Academic All-America Team. He also garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors for the fourth year in a row and has earned the team’s Scholar-Athlete Award three straight years. Edwards currently represents the program on the NCAA Division I Football Student-Athlete Connection Group.
Gulbin, a graduate transfer from Wake Forest, played in 41 games for the Demon Deacons the past four seasons with 23 starts (22 at guard, one at center). He garnered honorable mention All-ACC accolades in 2024 after starting all 12 games and grading out as the No. 2 overall guard in the ACC by Pro Football Focus. Earlier this month, Gulbin was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List for the nation’s most outstanding center.
Hall has racked up 91 tackles, 8.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks in his first two seasons wearing the Green and White. Last month, Hall was nominated for the AFCA Good Works Team and was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, which is widely regarded as college football’s premier award for community service. In the classroom, Hall was a recipient of the Dean’s List honor in Spring 2023 and was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in 2024. During the 2025 Spartan Academic Excellence Gala, Hall was named the male recipient of the Harold & Raynor Shnider Office of the Provost Award, which is presented to a freshman or sophomore student-athlete who embodies the characteristics promoted by Student-Athlete Support Services, with emphasis placed on academic performance, community involvement, and leadership ability. A native of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Hall recently represented Michigan State at the 2025 Big Ten Football Media Days in Las Vegas.
Michigan State opens the 2025 season against Western Michigan on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. in Spartan Stadium.
