Southern Miss Unveils Exciting Changes in Offense

Looking ahead to the upcoming season for Southern Miss

Defensive Preview

Southern Miss struggled on defense last season, allowing the most passing and rushing touchdowns in the Sun Belt conference. Their defense conceded an average of 6.7 yards per play, ranking at the bottom of the conference. Newly appointed defensive coordinator Clay Bignell aims to revamp the defensive unit after his tenure at FCS Eastern Illinois.

The team has also welcomed impactful transfer players to strengthen their defense. Safety Braxton Myers, who arrives from Purdue with a 4-star rating, and Tre Pinkney, a transfer from Coastal Carolina known for his solid defensive performance in 2022, are expected to make significant contributions.

Special Teams Preview

Southern Miss looks to enhance their kicking game for the upcoming season. Returning placekicker Andrew Stein demonstrated skill by connecting on 17 field goals out of 23 attempts. Punter Bryce Lofton, who successfully placed 13 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line, is back for another season. Return specialist Tiaquelin Mims, who scored a punt return in the previous season, may take on kickoff return duties in 2024.

Offensive Preview

Southern Miss has faced challenges due to injuries in recent years, impacting their performance on the field. To improve their standings, they aim to field a strong lineup without any depleted positions this season. Injuries played a significant role in their slow start last season, where they struggled and ranked below 90th in FBS across key metrics, such as yards per game (353.3).

A highlight of the offseason was the acquisition of quarterback Tate Rodemaker from Florida State. Rodemaker showcased his talent last season with FSU, notably in a crucial win against Florida. Standing at 6-foot-4, this Valdosta, Georgia native is a top contender for the starting quarterback position in Hattiesburg following his impressive performance with the Seminoles.

Another vital player to watch is running back Rodrigues Clark, who transferred from Memphis before the previous season. With Frank Gore Jr. now pursuing a professional career, Clark is set to lead the Eagles’ running game this year. He will be supported by an almost entirely reconstructed offensive line.
