South Carolina’s Shane Beamer Discusses Rahsul Faison, Geoff Collins & More

Shane Beamer held his annual press conference following the “Birdies with Beamer” media golf tournament at Cobblestone Park Golf Club. Here are the key highlights from his remarks:
Beamer was asked about running back Rahsul Faison’s eligibility battle with the NCAA.
“No updates. I wish I had better news,” Beamer said. “He texted me earlier, and I called him back. I’ve been in contact with people, trying to get things moving. I’ve got a lot of respect for NCAA president Charlie Baker, and I’m confident the right decision will be made.”
Beamer confirmed Faison will continue to practice while awaiting clearance.
“That’s the plan. He asked me the same question today, and I told him yes. Until I hear otherwise, he’s practicing.”
Beamer discussed bringing on former Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins as a senior defensive assistant.
“He’s an excellent coach with a deep resume — coordinator experience, time in the SEC, and even working in personnel under Nick Saban at Alabama,” Beamer said. “He’s been a head coach, and I always think it’s beneficial to have that experience on your staff. Guys like Shawn Elliott, Mike Shula, and Mike Furrey bring that as well.”
Beamer emphasized the connections between Collins and current Gamecock staff members:
-
He and Beamer were grad assistants at Georgia Tech in 2000.
-
Collins worked with Clayton White at Western Carolina.
-
He coached with Torian Gray at Florida.
-
He was on staff with Derrick Moore and George Wynn at Georgia Tech and Florida.
“He had other opportunities, but professionally and personally, this was a good fit. We’re excited to have him.”
Beamer reflected on the upcoming season opener against his alma mater, Virginia Tech.
“I enjoy big openers. They bring excitement during summer workouts, and this one will be huge — in Atlanta, at the Falcons’ stadium, with a big crowd and all eyes on us,” he said.
Beamer noted the emotional connection due to his history with the Hokies and his father, Frank Beamer’s legacy there.
“It’s unique — I haven’t coached against Virginia Tech yet. I’ve coached against just about every other program I’ve worked with, and now I get to add them. It’ll be emotional, but once the game starts, it’s about the players.”
Fall camp begins Thursday, and Beamer gave a brief update on the team’s health:
“Summer went well overall. We stayed relatively healthy. I’ll have a full update Thursday after meeting with our medical staff and head trainer Clint Haggard — who just had a birthday. Happy birthday, Clint!”
In summary, Beamer touched on a wide range of topics — from NCAA eligibility battles to staff additions and a high-profile season opener — showing optimism heading into a critical year for the Gamecocks.
