Sherrone Moore shares final verdict for Jaishawn Barham

Jaishawn Barham seemed to have scored a defensive touchdown on a fumble return against New Mexico last week, but officials flagged the standout linebacker for targeting on a hit to quarterback Jack Layne. As a result, Barham was ejected from the game, making him ineligible for the first half of Michigan’s Week 2 game against Oklahoma.
After the game, head coach Sherrone Moore expressed his disagreement with the call, saying it didn’t make sense and that the team planned to appeal.

During his Monday press conference, Moore confirmed that the appeal had been denied and Barham would indeed miss the first half against Oklahoma. Moore added that both he and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti were opposed to the ruling and believe the targeting rule needs to be revised.
Barham’s importance to the team cannot be overstated. He plays with speed and physicality, capable of lining up at both linebacker and edge, making him a constant threat to opposing offenses. In his absence, Michigan will turn to Jimmy Rolder and Cole Sullivan to fill the gap during the first half against Oklahoma.
Rolder is a seasoned player, considered the third starter, while Sullivan has made a strong impression when given the opportunity. The sophomore stood out in the second half against New Mexico, recording a sack on Layne and a late interception during a Lobos drive.
The Sooners won’t make things easy for Michigan’s linebackers. Quarterback John Mateer is not only a skilled passer but also mobile, requiring Ernest Hausmann and the rest of the defense to stay focused on their assignments. Additionally, Cal transfer Jayden Ott, who was a top player for the Bearcats last season, adds another dimension to Oklahoma’s offense.
At least Michigan fans can expect to see Barham back on the field by the third quarter.
