Social media expressed skepticism that Michigan would ever overtake 2025’s top quarterback prospect when reports of the school’s pursuit of LSU-committed Bryce Underwood first surfaced. But Sean Magee, the recruiting coordinator, and head coach Sherrone Moore disproved the doubters.
As an early enrollee, Underwood is currently wearing maize and blue and taking part in team practices. When talking about the high-profile flip, Moore’s recruiting philosophies were very clear: “The main thing, in my opinion, is that I simply wanted to acquire the top players available. And I’m going to put a lot of pressure on you to keep Michigan’s top players in Michigan when you have a child in the future.” Moore made it clear that this was a plan for future hiring rather than a one-time endeavor: “So I wanna placed a lot of emphasis on keeping those players in Michigan and preventing them from attending these other schools each year.
Early impressions indicate that Underwood is already assimilating into Michigan culture, despite his high NIL expectations. Moore’s evaluation of the five-star quarterback’s initial weeks has been positive: “He’s an amazing child, to start with. He is adored by the players. All he wants is to recover and be a fantastic teammate because they adore him. He is incredibly talented, though. His arms are very strong. He is capable of making every throw. He is able to run. He will be an incredible athlete. Underwood’s acquisition by Moore indicates that Michigan is making a big change in
their approach to hiring. In addition to successfully converting one of the country’s best prospects from an SEC powerhouse, the Wolverines have developed a strong commitment to defending their home field. Moore’s focus on keeping Michigan’s top talent at home seems to be paying off right away, as Underwood is already impressing in practice and winning over his new teammates.
