Breaking: Flames Officially Sign Former Predators Defenseman to PTO

The Calgary Flames are set to introduce additional competition at their training camp by signing a veteran defenseman to a professional tryout contract. General manager Craig Conroy confirmed that Tyson Barrie will be participating in training camp on a PTO.

The news of Barrie signing a PTO was first reported by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff last week, but now the Flames have made the signing official.

Tyson Barrie played the 2023-24 season with the Nashville Predators, participating in 41 games where he scored one goal and provided 14 assists, totaling 15 points. Due to injuries, he only played half the season and appeared in just one playoff game.

As he approaches the 2024-25 season at 33 years old, Barrie is still anticipated to be one of the top puck-moving defensemen in the NHL. Over the course of his career, he has played 809 games, recording 109 goals and 396 assists for a total of 505 points.

Barrie entered the league during the 2011-12 season after being selected as a third-round draft pick (64th overall) by the Colorado Avalanche in 2009. He spent parts of eight seasons with Colorado, achieving a career-high of 59 points (14 goals and 45 assists) in the 2018-19 season, which was his last with the team.

Prior to his trade to the Predators in the 2022-23 season, Barrie also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers traded him to Nashville along with a first-round pick in exchange for Mattias Ekholm.

Barrie played 65 games with the Predators and now has the opportunity to continue his career with the Flames.

While Calgary’s defensive roster is nearly complete, there is still a chance for Barrie to secure a depth position. As a capable puck mover who shoots right, he could be a valuable addition to the lineup if he performs well during training camp.

Barrie’s signing of a PTO comes shortly after the Flames announced the signing of veteran defenseman Jarred Tinordi to a one-year, two-way contract.
