The San Francisco Giants have fired their president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, and appointed franchise legend Buster Posey in his place.
Zaidi’s time in the Bay Area was characterized by underachievement. Although the Giants recorded a franchise-best 107 wins in 2021, which earned him the Executive of the Year Award, the team only made one postseason appearance. Despite this, they extended Zaidi’s contract for an additional three years in October 2023.

His tenure included significant signings during the 2023 offseason, such as Blake Snell, Jung Hoo Lee, Jorge Soler, Jordan Hicks, and Matt Chapman. However, Snell was signed for only one year, and Soler was traded back to the Atlanta Braves at the deadline. Chapman signed a six-year, $ 151 million contract extension on September 4, with Posey reportedly leading negotiations with him, according to The Athletic.
Before his time with the Giants, Zaidi worked for the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers, serving as assistant general manager and general manager, respectively. He leaves the Giants with a record of 453-417 (.521 winning percentage).
In contrast, Posey, a three-time World Series champion with the Giants in 2010, 2012, and 2014, retired after the 2021 season. He joined the club’s 30-member ownership group and has been on its board of directors since September 2022. Now, at 37 years old, he is stepping into a critical leadership role for the franchise.
During his impressive 12-year career, Posey was named the 2012 NL MVP, earned seven All-Star selections, was the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year, received five Silver Slugger Awards, won a Gold Glove, and clinched a batting title. His appointment marks the start of a new chapter for the Giants.
