Four UNC basketball guards combined for 59 points against Hawaii.
In their 87-69 victory over the previously unbeaten Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in Honolulu, 10 players contributed to the scoring for the No. 10-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. However, a trio of starting guards along with freshman Ian Jackson combined for over two-thirds of the team’s total points.
Despite being out-rebounded 40-26, the Tar Heels’ efficient play from the perimeter helped set the tone for the game. They committed a season-low five turnovers and had a significant 19-1 advantage in fast breaks.
Defending ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis led the team with 18 points, surpassing 1982 national champion Sam Perkins to move into fourth place on UNC’s all-time scoring list. The graduate guard recorded a shooting line of 6-for-14 from the field, 2-for-6 from three-point range, and 4-for-5 at the free throw line, along with three rebounds and four assists while playing a game-high 34 minutes.
Sophomore Elliot Cadeau impressed despite limited time on the court due to early foul trouble, scoring 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting and a perfect 3-for-3 from the line, while also contributing four assists and two steals.
Breakout junior Seth Trimble continued his strong season with 13 points, three rebounds, four assists, one block, and two steals, successfully making his only 3-point attempt and missing just one of seven free throws.
Returning from a lower leg injury that sidelined him during the previous week’s 107-55 win over American, Jackson made an impact off the bench with 11 points in 19 minutes, alongside two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels (3-1, 0-0 ACC) will prepare to face the Dayton Flyers (5-0, 0-0 Atlantic 10) in the first round of the Maui Invitational at 11:30 p.m. ET on Monday (ESPN2).
