Johni Broome earned yet another piece of recognition on Tuesday.
He was named AP SEC Player of the Year, one day after earning the same award from the conference’s head coaches. It comes after a regular season in which he averaged 18.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.4 blocks per game, leading Auburn in each category.
Broome is now the third player in Auburn history to win the award, joining Charles Barkley in 1984 and Chris Porter in 1999. Broome also received 15 of the 16 player of the year votes, nearly winning the award unanimously.
“First off, all glory to God,” Broome said in a release. “It is an honor and means a lot to be recognized by the coaches and the press as SEC Player of the Year. It shows the respect they have for me and the league, especially during such a historic season.”
Broome was also unanimously selected to the AP All-SEC First Team along with Walter Clayton Jr. of Florida, Tre Johnson of Texas, Chaz Lanier of Tennessee and Mark Sears of Alabama.
Auburn will begin the postseason Friday, facing either Ole Miss, Arkansas or South Carolina in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. Tipoff from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville is scheduled for noon and the game will be televised on ESPN.
