Seattle Mariners Promote Top Prospects to Double-A
The Seattle Mariners boast one of the most exciting and highly regarded farm systems in all of Major League Baseball. According to MLB Pipeline, they currently lead the league with nine prospects ranked in the Top 100. Among them is Cole Young, who recently made his MLB debut and is finding his rhythm after a slow start. Meanwhile, two other top prospects are earning promotions thanks to red-hot performances in the minors.

Outfielder/designated hitter Lazaro Montes and infielder Michael Arroyo are both moving up from High-A Everett to Double-A Arkansas. Montes, ranked No. 2 in the Mariners’ system and No. 32 overall in MLB, has been compared to Yordan Alvarez. In 67 games with Everett, the 6-foot-5 Cuban slugger posted a .268/.387/.572 slash line, leading the Northwest League in home runs (18), RBIs (50), slugging percentage, and OPS. He also recorded five triples and drew 48 walks while striking out 83 times.
Arroyo, ranked No. 7 in Seattle’s system and No. 77 overall, put together an impressive campaign as well, slashing .269/.422/.512 over 65 games. The versatile 20-year-old infielder tallied 14 doubles, 15 home runs, 41 runs scored, and 39 RBIs, while playing across the infield at third base, shortstop, and second.
At the start of the season, Everett’s roster was stacked with talent, including top-ranked Mariners prospect Colt Emerson (No. 16 overall), Jonny Farmelo (No. 76), and ambidextrous pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje (No. 86).
While it’s unlikely Montes or Arroyo will reach the majors this season, they’re now one step closer. If injuries hit the big-league club again, either could be called up. And if they impress next spring—much like Julio Rodríguez did in 2022—there’s a strong chance they could break camp with the big-league roster.
