The Seattle Mariners secured an important series victory to open their 10-game road trip over the weekend, taking two out of three games against the Chicago Cubs. Next up, they’ll shift their focus to the second leg of the trip with a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins starting Monday.

Seattle and Minnesota last met from May 30 to June 1 at T-Mobile Park, where the Mariners took that three-game set. This time, the teams will square off at Target Field from June 23-26.

Upcoming Pitching Matchups For Series Between Seattle Mariners, Minnesota Twins

Winning the series against the Twins would not only strengthen Seattle’s position in the American League Wild Card race but also help them gain ground on the Houston Astros in the AL West standings.

Here’s the pitching matchup for the series opener:

Monday, June 23 — Bryan Woo (Mariners) vs. Bailey Ober (Twins)

Bryan Woo heads into Monday’s start after delivering his fourth seven-inning quality outing of the season. In his June 17 performance against the Boston Red Sox, he struck out six, walked two, hit one batter, and gave up just one hit over seven innings—Seattle’s lone win in that series. Woo has gone six or more innings in all 14 of his starts this season.

Bailey Ober has had a tough time keeping offenses in check over the past month. In his last four starts, he’s given up 18 earned runs on 26 hits, including eight home runs. He’s made it through six innings only once during that span. Most recently, against the Cincinnati Reds on June 18, Ober struck out five but surrendered four earned runs on nine hits (including one homer) over 5.2 innings.

Tuesday, June 24 — Luis Castillo (Mariners) vs. Chris Paddack (Twins)

While not every outing has been spotless, Luis Castillo continues to provide the Mariners with the consistency expected of a seasoned veteran. He’s logged six quality starts in his last seven appearances and hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in all but two outings since May 9. In his June 18 start against Boston, Castillo struck out five, walked two, hit a batter, and gave up three earned runs on three hits (two home runs) across six innings.

Chris Paddack, like Bailey Ober, has had difficulty limiting runs in his recent starts. Over his last two appearances, he’s given up 13 runs (12 earned) on 18 hits, including two home runs, in just nine total innings. He’s managed only four strikeouts during that span.

Wednesday, June 25 — George Kirby (Mariners) vs. Joe Ryan (Twins)

George Kirby is gradually rounding into form as the season progresses. His most recent outing on June 20 against the Cubs wasn’t his sharpest, though the conditions—gusty 20+ mph winds and temperatures above 90 degrees—played a role. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits (two homers), walked one, and struck out three over five innings.

Joe Ryan has managed to go beyond the sixth inning just once in his last four starts, but he’s maintained strong strikeout numbers during that time. Over his past three outings, he’s fanned 20 batters while giving up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits, including one home run. In his June 20 start against the Milwaukee Brewers, Ryan recorded seven strikeouts, issued three walks, and allowed three earned runs on three hits over 5.1 innings.

Thursday, June 26 — Emerson Hancock (Mariners) vs. Simeon Woods Richardson (Twins)

Emerson Hancock was one of several pitchers who struggled with the tough conditions at Wrigley Field over the weekend, leading to one of the roughest outings of his young career. In his June 21 start against the Cubs, he gave up nine earned runs on six hits—including four home runs—while striking out five and walking three.

Simeon Woods Richardson will look to rebound following a shaky performance. On June 21 against the Brewers, he struck out three, walked three, and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits.
