Watching the San Antonio Spurs last season, it was clear that Victor Wembanyama is a top-15 player in the NBA, especially with a reliable point guard. Last season, Tre Jones was Wembanyama’s teammate, and while he could get the ball to him, he wasn’t elite.
The Spurs upgraded by drafting Stephon Castle and signing Chris Paul, widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards ever. Although Paul is 39 years old and past his prime, he is expected to be an improvement over Jones and will mentor Castle as he adjusts to the NBA.
Paul has played 19 NBA seasons with many talented teammates, including big men like DeAndre Jordan, Deandre Ayton, and Blake Griffin. While those players lacked consistent outside shooting, Wembanyama brings a different dynamic, having made 32.5% of his 5.5 three-point attempts last season. This shooting threat makes him unique compared to any big man Paul has previously played with, as he can defend, shoot, cut, and catch lobs.
As Paul approaches the end of his career, he will be playing with perhaps the most talented player he’s ever shared the court with, enhancing both their performances.
