Nebraska football is among the teams in contact with Virginia Tech transfer cornerback Dante Lovett. They are one of over 25 schools that have contacted the corner. On3’s Pete Nakos reported this.

Lovett has had a productive college career. He played in all 13 games as a freshman in 2023. In total, he has 36 tackles, seven pass breakups, and one interception at the collegiate level. He entered the transfer portal following the firing of Hokies head coach Brent Pry.

Lovett was also highly regarded as a recruit. He was the 38th overall safety in the 2023 class and the ninth overall player in the state of Maryland, according to the 247Sports Rankings.

The Huskers have done a good job at identifying talent at the corner position via the transfer portal. Ceyair Wright and Andrew Marshall are prime examples of this. Landing Lovett would be another notch in the belt for an already-deep secondary.

Schools in contact are Colorado, Florida State, Nebraska and Wisconsin, among others.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has challenged his coaching staff to make definitive decisions regarding the running back depth chart during the bye week, as there is still uncertainty about the position after the first four games of the season.

Rhule’s Challenge to Staff

Matt Rhule is urging his assistants to clarify the order of the running backs and to assess which players deserve increased roles moving forward. The depth behind starter Emmett Johnson remains unresolved, with redshirt freshman Mekhi Nelson and true freshman Isaiah Mozee among those vying for significant snaps. Rhule’s directive emphasizes finding a reliable rotation to boost offensive production, particularly as inconsistent backfield play has contributed to lackluster results against top opponents like Michigan.

Current Running Back Situation

Nebraska entered the season with Emmett Johnson as the clear starter, but the depth chart is in flux. Freshmen such as Kwinten Ives and Isaiah Mozee have shown promise in limited action, yet their performances have prompted the staff to reevaluate pecking order and roles, especially after less effective outings in Big Ten play.

This challenge reflects Rhule’s broader developmental philosophy: focusing on roster youth and player growth. He has stressed that the success of Nebraska’s season hinges not just on the starters, but on the ability of younger players—the “twos and threes”—to contribute without sacrificing effectiveness. Resolving the running back depth chart is a key priority as the team prepares for the remainder of the schedule.

Overall, Rhule’s move has put the spotlight on the coaching staff to make crucial decisions that could shape Nebraska’s offensive identity for 2025 and beyond
