Report reveals where Notre Dame really stands on joining the Big Ten
Notre Dame has been in a unique situation for many years, and that might not change anytime soon.
In this era of college football, almost nothing stays the same from year to year. With the second year of the 12-team playoff set to kick off later this month, there are plenty of questions about what the future of the sport might look like.
The Fighting Irish have maintained their status as an independent program in college football, and while the program has ACC ties, they still have full control over their situation. Recently, Jim Williams responded to a fan about Notre Dame’s potential interest in joining the Big Ten.
Williams was quick to respond with a clear message about the Fighting Irish. Williams pointed out that Notre Dame’s partnership with the ACC in football would also be likely to continue if it can have everything on its own terms.
Ultimately, Williams simply denied that Notre Dame would have interest in the Big Ten, even in a situation where the ACC collapsed. Considering Marcus Freeman’s squad was just in the national championship game last season, it wouldn’t make much sense for the Fighting Irish to switch up what is clearly working for them.
Although there will always be critics about Notre Dame’s strategy, the Fighting Irish look poised to remain an independent for the foreseeable future.
