The Cleveland Cavaliers are now searching for a new coach. But include one more former NBA head coach in the mix, in addition to Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego.

Hiring former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts is “among the scenarios Cleveland has contemplated in the initial stages of its coaching search,” according to veteran NBA insider Marc Stein. From Substack ($) with Stein:

Although it’s unclear if the Cavaliers will retain Darius Garland on the team this offseason, league sources claim that Cleveland had initially considered signing Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts as one of its coaching options.

Although former Nets coach Kenny Atkinson is regarded as the early favorite, Borrego, Stotts, former Cavaliers coaching consultant Dave Joerger, and Knicks associate head coach Johnnie Bryant—who is close to Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell from their time together in Utah—are among the other coaching candidates vying to succeed J.B. Bickerstaff.

Regarding Stotts: Mitchell and Garland are similar to the backcourt of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, who were both coached by Stotts for eight seasons while they were in Portland.

Not much is present here. With a record of 720-402, Stotts, 66, has the longest and most prosperous tenure of any head coach from 2012 to 2021. He is a highly regarded offensive strategist who has experience working with two guards, Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. If the Cavaliers decide to retain the two together, he may serve as a prototype for Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland. He served as Adrian Griffin’s assistant coach in Milwaukee for a portion of the previous season before resigning due to an altercation between the two.

Additionally, Stotts served as an assistant for the 2011 NBA champion Mavericks squad, which received credit for having a part in the offense’s design. He has held positions as the Milwaukee Bucks’ and Atlanta Hawks’ head coach.

Along with the other names in Stein’s article, a running list of potential head coaches for the Cavaliers consists of:
