Reds ‘aggressively pursue’ trade for $75 million Cardinals pitcher

The Cincinnati Reds may seek a trade for St. Louis Cardinals ace. Following a disappointing 2024 season that has them at risk of finishing last in the NL Central, the Reds are experiencing a five-game losing streak. A win in their final game would provide some solace as they look towards the 2025 season. Recently, President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall dismissed manager David Bell, and the Reds aim to return to the postseason next year.

Reports indicate they are targeting a former player, with USA Today‘s Bob Nightengale stating that the Cardinals, who are looking to reduce payroll, plan to shop veteran starter Sonny Gray. Gray signed a three-year, $ 75 million contract last winter and holds a full no-trade clause, though the Reds are expected to be among the teams pursuing him actively.

Gray had a notable stint with the Reds from 2019 to 2021 before joining the Minnesota Twins. After a third-place finish in the NL Central, the Cardinals are reportedly exploring options that might include trading Gray back to Cincinnati.

Sonny Gray would likely fit right in once again with Reds

The Reds have not reached the postseason since the shortened 2020 season, but the team is showing signs of improvement. They possess a wealth of young talent emerging from their minor league system, highlighted by starting pitchers Hunter Greene and Andrew Abbott, along with shortstop Elly de la Cruz and outfielder Spencer Steer. Despite having many talented players on their major league roster, injuries have heavily impacted the team, contributing to their last-place finish this season.
