Red Sox Blockbuster Trade Lands Padres $13 Million Superstar In 5-Player Swap

After acquiring Garrett Crochet to bolster their pitching lineup, it’s evident that the Red Sox are still uncertain about their starting rotation as they head into the 2025 season. If they could bring in a right-handed ace to join Crochet at the top of the rotation, it might bolster their confidence.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the San Diego Padres are considering trading Dylan Cease this winter. The 28-year-old right-hander is set to become a free agent after this season and is projected to earn around $ 13 million this year (according to Spotrac).

Cease, who has achieved two top-five finishes in the Cy Young voting over the past three years and possesses one of the most lethal sliders in the game, would be a fantastic fit for the Red Sox. However, securing him would likely come at a price, especially since he’d only be under team control for one more year unless an extension is negotiated.

While the Padres’ exact demands for Cease are unclear, a potential trade scenario could involve a mix of high-level prospects and players nearing the majors:

Red Sox receive: SP Dylan Cease, RP Wandy Peralta
Padres receive: INF Franklin Arias, SP David Sandlin, OF Allan Castro

Arias, a talented shortstop, ranks as the Red Sox’s fourth-best prospect and is No. 95 overall in MLB. Sandlin, a hard-throwing righty, is Boston’s eighth-best prospect, while Castro has already reached Double-A at just 21 and sits at 14th in the team’s rankings.

Peralta would be a valuable addition for the Red Sox, as he has an unusual four-year contract featuring player options for 2025 (already taken), 2026, and 2027. The Padres have two dependable left-handers returning to their bullpen, and Peralta was mainly used for garbage time during the playoffs.

Is this trade certain to happen exactly as outlined? Not at all. However, it seems to be a reasonable estimate of what the Padres might seek from Boston or any interested team to part with Cease.
