Rangers maintained their aspirations for a domestic sweep by defeating Hearts convincingly, thanks to a pair of goals from Cyriel Dessers, setting the stage for a first Old Firm Scottish Cup Final against Celtic since 2002.
Dessers, the Nigerian international, found the back of the net twice, firstly within the initial five minutes with a low shot that slipped under the Hearts goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, after a skillful shift of the ball to his left foot. His second goal was slightly deflected after his initial attempt was saved.Rangers, under the leadership of Philippe Clement, entered the semi-final with low morale, having won only two of their previous eight matches in all competitions.
However, they never appeared to be in danger of losing their early advantage at Hampden Park.Hearts had a few promising moments in the attacking third, but they lacked the necessary quality and calmness to breach the Rangers defense.
Whenever they managed to create an opportunity, Jack Butland, the Rangers goalkeeper, demonstrated once again his exceptional form.Rangers began the game with a high level of energy and intensity that was absent from their midweek goalless draw with Dundee in the Scottish Premiership at Dens Park. It took Hearts, who were sluggish, nearly half an hour to adjust to the game’s pace, and their top scorer, Lawrence Shankland, almost gave them a lifeline with a header at the back post that brushed the side-netting.
Rangers’ goalkeeper, Jack Butland, received an impressive rating of 8 out of 10 for his performance in the match against Hearts. Despite Hearts’ attempts to breach the Rangers defense, Butland was instrumental in keeping a clean sheet, making crucial saves when called upon. His performance was crucial in securing Rangers’ victory and advancing to the final.
2. James Tavernier – 6/10
A lackluster attempt followed a brilliant setup by Matondo that did not pose a threat to the Hearts goalkeeper. A poorly executed free-kick from 20 yards out sailed well over the crossbar. An early slip in the second half nearly resulted in an opportunity for Vargas.
3. Leon Balogun – 7/10
Returning from illness to substitute for Goldson, he directed a header from Diomande’s high pass directly at Gordon, but was flagged offside. Intercepted Vargas’ ground cross early in the second half. Showed great authority and control throughout the game.
4. John Souttar – 5/10
Met with a few boos from the Hearts supporters at the start of the game. Performed solidly in the first half, but made a mistake early in the second half that allowed Vargas to break through. Later received a yellow card for tackling Forrest.c
