Pirates sign 3rd-round pick, experienced left-hander from Wake Forest

On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates signed their sixth player from the 2024 MLB draft class: Josh Hartle, a left-handed pitcher from Wake Forest, who was selected in the third round.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Hartle, 21, is the highest-drafted player the team has signed so far. He joins right-handers Matt Ager and Gavin Adams, left-hander Connor Wietgrefe, shortstop Duce Gourson, and catcher Derek Berg.

According to MLB Pipeline, Hartle was ranked as the No. 70 prospect in the draft.

As a junior, he recorded a 6-3 record with a 5.79 ERA over 74 2/3 innings, striking out 81 batters.

During his sophomore season in 2023, he achieved first-team All-American recognition from Baseball America and the National Baseball Writers Association, finishing with an impressive 11-2 record and a 2.81 ERA. He was also recognized as a first-team All-ACC player.

Hartle has been assigned to the Florida Complex League in Bradenton.
