Patrick Mahomes sends thoughts as Chiefs Urged to Sign $128 Million Former No. 2 Pick QB

The Kansas City Chiefs may consider utilizing the services of Carson Wentz, a former second overall pick in the NFL Draft, as a backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes, as free agency progresses further.

Wentz, who was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2016 NFL Draft, played a crucial role in Philadelphia’s journey to the Super Bowl in a remarkable 2017 season. However, injuries and inconsistency have affected the 31-year-old’s career in recent times.

CBS Sports believes that Wentz could be a great fit as Patrick Mahomes’ backup for the Kansas City Chiefs, who are aiming to make history by winning three consecutive Super Bowls in the upcoming 2024 season.

According to Cody Benjamin of CBS, Wentz is seen as one of the top remaining backup quarterbacks, showcasing his talent during a brief period as Matthew Stafford’s backup in 2023. The Chiefs have a gap behind Mahomes after Blaine Gabbert left the team, and they had shown interest in Wentz the previous year.

Wentz, who has faced challenges on the field and with team dynamics in Philadelphia and Indianapolis, had to accept a backup role with the Los Angeles Rams after being released by the Washington Commanders.

Carson Wentz’s Potential Fit with Kansas City Chiefs

Wentz delivered his most impressive performances during his second NFL season, mentored by former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, who has strong ties to Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

In Philadelphia, Wentz showcased his skills by completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 16,811 yards, recording 113 touchdowns and 50 interceptions.

Nevertheless, concerns persist regarding Wentz, including his susceptibility to injuries, periods of inconsistency, and mixed reviews from his later years in both Philadelphia and Washington.

Despite these risks, a degree of familiarity with the offensive scheme and the opportunity to join a successful team with a winning culture in Kansas City could provide a favorable landing spot for Wentz as he navigates his career as a journeyman backup quarterback.
