The Milwaukee Brewers secured the NL Central title on Wednesday before their game against the Philadelphia Phillies, following the Chicago Cubs’ 5-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics earlier in the day.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy addressed the media about his team’s achievement prior to Wednesday’s game.
“No one in Spring Training would have predicted the Brewers would win the NL Central, except maybe a few guys in that room,” Murphy stated. “This highlights one essential aspect: it’s a game about people.”
“You can throw as many challenges at us as you’d like… it all comes down to people, and you never know what their best can be,” Murphy added. “These players don’t fully understand their potential and still don’t, but they do recognize one thing: working together and facing doubts can propel you toward a championship.”
Murphy is onto something. Few in the baseball world anticipated the Brewers winning the NL Central. They had lost their long-time manager Craig Counsell, deemed one of the best in the game, to their division rival Cubs, and former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. Additionally, Brandon Woodruff was set to miss the entire season due to a shoulder injury.
Despite these setbacks, Murphy, in his first year as a full-time Major League manager, successfully led the Brewers to the top of the NL Central and into the postseason.
