Padres Make Roster Changes After Trading Three Key Players For Future Contention

The San Diego Padres announced a round of roster changes as they continue to tweak their bullpen in preparation for their next game. On Wednesday, the team optioned right-hander Matt Waldron to Triple-A El Paso and brought up fellow righty Ron Marinaccio from the same affiliate. In addition, they selected the contract of right-hander Eduarniel Núñez, officially adding him to the 40-man roster.
Matt Waldron returns to El Paso following a string of inconsistent outings at the major league level. While he has demonstrated potential—particularly with his signature knuckleball—his inability to limit runs led to the demotion. This move gives Waldron a chance to regroup and fine-tune his approach in the minors, keeping him in the mix for a future call-up.
Ron Marinaccio is back in the majors, continuing a season in which he has frequently moved between levels. Since joining the Padres’ system, he has performed well in Triple-A, relying on a mix of fastballs and sliders to keep hitters off balance. With prior MLB experience, including time with the Yankees, Marinaccio brings reliability and late-inning versatility to manager Mike Shildt’s bullpen.
The most notable roster move sees 23-year-old Eduarniel Núñez joining the big-league squad for the first time. Known for his blazing fastball and sharp off-speed pitches, Núñez has posted impressive strikeout numbers and handled pressure situations well in El Paso. By selecting his contract, the Padres add a promising arm to the bullpen while also shielding him from being claimed by other teams.
These changes underscore the Padres’ continued efforts to manage a deep and adaptable bullpen amid injuries and uneven performances. Núñez brings a high-octane presence to the relief unit, while Marinaccio offers a more seasoned option. Though Waldron is temporarily out of the picture, he remains a viable option for future call-ups.
With the National League playoff race intensifying, San Diego is working to strengthen its pitching depth to stay competitive down the stretch.
