The Baltimore Orioles, like every team, are making some house-cleaning moves to get ready for next season. As a result, the team designated Carson Ragsdale for assignment.
Ragsdale was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves this year as well. This is his second time being designated for assignment by the Orioles. The Orioles cut him loose in September, and the Braves claimed him. The Braves designated him for assignment five days later and he was re-claimed by the Orioles on waivers three days after that.
Ragsdale played in just two big league games for the Orioles and allowed eight earned runs in five innings. He pitched in seven games for the Orioles’ Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, and had a 3.47 ERA. Ragsdale was bouncing around organizations for most of the year, and the Orioles were the only team he got a chance to pitch for in the big leagues.
His time in the big leagues with the Orioles was his first time pitching in the big leagues. Now that he has been designated for assignment, the Orioles have a week to work out a trade or pass him on to waivers. He could end up being claimed again, but the Orioles will have the option to place him on unconditional release waivers.
If he clears that process, he would be unconditionally released. Some teams may be willing to take a chance on him, but he is 27 years old and has not had much success, even in the minor leagues.
