After a successful era from 2017 to 2023, the Astros were unable to progress past the first round of the playoffs last season. Their payroll has soared to a record high, and they have begun parting ways with some of their star players.
Third baseman Alex Bregman appears to have no role waiting for him, while right fielder Kyle Tucker has already been traded to the Chicago Cubs. The Astros seem to recognize that maintaining a top-five payroll may not be the most sustainable path to success.
Nevertheless, the Astros are likely exploring the free-agent market for a replacement for Tucker, as their current outfield lacks significant star power.
Laura Albanese from Newsday recently said that Houston will pursue former Baltimore Orioles All-Star Anthony Santander in free agency.
“Santander isn’t without flaws: he lacks speed, is an average defender at best, and doesn’t reach base frequently. However, he provides immediate offensive production, and many teams would find that valuable,” Albanese noted.
“The Astros could benefit from more offense, particularly if they do not re-sign Bregman, and they need outfield support.”
Santander, 30, achieved a career-high 44 home runs in 2024, ranking third in MLB. He also accumulated 102 RBI, posted an .814 OPS with a 134 OPS+, and earned 2.9 bWAR.
According to The Athletic, Santander’s projected contract could be five years for $ 105 million. However, the market may not be as competitive for the switch-hitter as initially anticipated, which might allow the Astros to negotiate a more affordable deal.
While financial constraints could be a significant hurdle, the Astros would greatly benefit from a player like Santander to enhance their outfield. Ultimately, only time will reveal if this opportunity is viable.
