Opposing coach offers encouring prediction for purdue in 2024

Opposing coach expects Purdue to have a ‘breakout’ in 2024

Purdue enters the second year under Ryan Walters with high hopes for improved performance. The disappointing 4-8 season was not in line with the program’s expectations, especially after achieving back-to-back winning seasons. Getting back to a winning record is probably the main objective for the Boilermakers in 2024.

There are outsiders who have confidence in Purdue, particularly in terms of their defensive capabilities. A Big Ten assistant coach, who chose to remain anonymous, believes that Walters has prepared the team for significant progress. According to the coach, having more time in the system is crucial for their success.

“Watch these guys for a defensive breakout,” the coach said. “They didn’t fully understand the system Ryan [Walters] installed in Year 1. They’ve brought in some really talented transfers, and a lot of their key guys are back. This is going to be the identity of the team.”

Rival teams scored an average of more than 30 points per game against Purdue in the previous season, a surprising statistic for Walters, especially considering his track record of fielding strong defensive units at Illinois as the coordinator. It’s likely that he was not pleased with his team conceding at least 30 points in all but four games.

Players like Dillon Thieneman, who had an impressive debut season as a freshman, are expected to contribute to the team’s improvement.

On the other hand, the same coach is optimistic about Hudson Card’s return for another season. Purdue will continue to operate an Air Raid system under offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, a strategy that is not widely embraced by many teams in the Big 12.

However, it will be crucial to focus on developing around the quarterback. Supporting Card to stay protected and providing him with consistent targets will be vital for the Boilermakers’ success.

Coach mentioned, “Hudson is a seasoned and reliable quarterback, and he has gained another year of experience in Harrell’s system… They must enhance the offensive line and receivers, but anticipate an overall improvement from them this season”

Purdue starts the season against Indiana State and then faces a tough lineup of eleven games against formidable opponents, including nine Big Ten games, Notre Dame, and Oregon State. If they aim for a better record, Walters will have to work hard for it.

At present, at least one rival assistant coach believes in Walters’ ability to deliver in 2024, particularly in bolstering the defense, an area where Walters has excelled throughout his coaching career.
