Ole Miss coach shares a personal message that’s bigger than football
With nearly 850,000 combined Twitter/X and Instagram followers, Ole Miss head football coach Lane Kiffin has a social media platform that few in the college athletics world do.
And while Kiffin has taken advantage of the internet to troll media members or poke fun at ongoing trends, he also knows when to use that platform for good. Kiffin took to Instagram on Tuesday morning, sharing a photo of the rapper Eminem in hopes of inspiring others.
“I started treating sobriety like a superpower,” reads the Eminem quote, which comes from the new “STANS” documentary. “I was proud of the fact that I could quit.”
“Go get the HIGHEST version of yourself!!” Kiffin wrote. “It’s amazing and beautiful. 💪”
Kiffin, who is entering his sixth season at Ole Miss, has been public in recent years about his own sobriety. The veteran head coach told ESPN last summer that he had not had a drink in over 3 1/2 years.
“There’s a freedom in not feeling like you need a drink to celebrate a big win or get over a tough loss,” Kiffin said. “There’s a freedom of not having to have acceptance of what some guy writes about you or what the fans think of you or if you’re on the hot seat.”
Kiffin is 44-18 at Ole Miss and has recorded four straight winning seasons. The Rebels ranked No. 21 in the season’s first AP Top 25 poll.
Ole Miss begins its 2025 season against Georgia State on Saturday, Aug. 30.
