Ohio State Football Has 3-Word Message For Lee Corso
On Thursday, ESPN College GameDay officially announced the news we had been anticipating—and dreading: Lee Corso is retiring.
The show revealed that the first week of the 2025 college football season will be Coach Corso’s last appearance before he steps away from his role.
Throughout his decades on the show, Corso had a front-row seat to many victories for the Ohio State Buckeyes, often showcasing his signature “Headgear Selection” by wearing the head of the beloved mascot, Brutus Buckeye. He served as an analyst during three of the team’s national championship wins.
Recently, the Ohio State Football account took to X to pay tribute to Coach Corso, sharing a heartfelt message: “Enjoy Retirement Lee,” along with an Ohio buckeye emoji and several photos of Corso donning the Brutus Buckeye headgear.

Corso gained recognition as a college football coach at Louisville and Indiana, guiding both teams to bowl games during his 15-year head coaching career.
Although he never defeated the Buckeyes while coaching the Hoosiers for a decade, he led Indiana to its first bowl victory in 1979. His total of 41 wins remains third in the program’s history.
After wrapping up his coaching career in the mid-1980s, Corso transitioned to broadcasting. He was part of the inaugural season of ESPN College GameDay in 1987, and his Headgear Selection segment has become a beloved tradition for millions of football fans over the years.
While it would be fitting for Corso to cover a game for one of his former teams, Ohio State seems to be the most likely choice since they are set to face Texas in Week 1 next season.
The Buckeyes will host Texas on August 31 in a rematch of the earlier Cotton Bowl Classic.
If there’s ever a moment for Corso to don the Brutus head one last time, it would be at Ohio Stadium during the final week of his broadcasting career.
Do you think College GameDay will cover the Ohio State-Texas game, or will they choose a different matchup?
