BREAKING: Former Canucks Iconic voice, named new Calgary Flames play-by-play announcer

The Calgary Flames have appointed Jon Abbott as their new play-by-play announcer on Sportsnet, taking over from Rick Ball, who recently moved to the Chicago Blackhawks. Abbott will be part of an experienced broadcast team featuring analysts Kelly Hrudey and Greg Millen, along with host Ryan Leslie, as the Flames prepare for the upcoming 2024-2025 NHL season.

With over 20 years of experience in sports broadcasting, Abbott has covered NHL, CHL, AHL, and World Juniors games, as well as significant events like the World Men’s Hockey Championship and the Olympics. He is known for his in-depth understanding of the game and engaging presentation.

Abbott has prior connections with the Flames, dating back to when he covered the Vancouver Canucks on TSN 1040. He initially stepped into a similar role when Rick Ball moved from Vancouver to Calgary during the 2014-15 season. In Vancouver, he worked alongside analyst Dave Tomlinson before transitioning to Sportsnet, where Brendan Batchelor succeeded him in play-by-play duties.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the Flames’ broadcast team, Abbott mentioned the opportunity to engage with Calgary’s passionate fans. He said, “I’m really excited to relay the terrific moments that are ahead because this is a team that I think is going to have a lot of bright spots and is going to be able to take steps moving forward season after season.” He looks forward to sharing players’ journeys, telling their stories, and connecting with the fanbase.

As the Flames gear up for their 2024-2025 season, Abbott’s arrival is set to bring a new and vibrant perspective to their game coverage. The season opener is scheduled for October 9th against the Vancouver Canucks.
