Sherrone Moore has resolved the quarterback situation with a significant move. Yes, Bryce Underwood appears to be the solution the Wolverines have been seeking throughout their tumultuous 7-5 season. The 17-year-old, who is currently rated as the nation’s top QB, initially committed to the Tigers in January and had turned down offers from other schools since then.
However, “money speaks,” and a more attractive NIL deal made him rethink his decision. After backing out on Brian Kelly, the Belleville high school quarterback decided to join the Wolverines. He’s now attending meetings and seminars while adjusting to life in Ann Arbor. While he’s positioned as a key player in the offense, “he can’t do it alone.” Michigan will need to provide him with support, including another strong QB.
A couple of analysts from On3 have suggested that Michigan might be able to secure former Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., who entered the transfer portal on Thursday. In addition, the host of Michigan Sports Talk mentioned, “He’s interested in Michigan, and you know, for Michigan’s sake, I mean this is the type of quarterback they are looking for.”
With the elite freshman Bryce Underwood competing for the starting role, Michigan currently has only Davis Warren, Jadyn Davis, and the incoming freshman Chase Herbstreit. “So, Michigan really needs another quarterback who’s going to push the younger guys like Jadyn Davis and Bryce Underwood and also compete for the starting job and kind of just relieve some stress off of Bryce Underwood.”

Billy Edwards Jr. has been an exciting player to watch this season. He was originally a backup to Taulia Tagovailoa during his first two seasons at Maryland, but he has always had more potential. In 2024, Edwards showcased significant versatility, throwing for 2,881 yards at a 65% completion rate and recording 15 touchdowns along with nine interceptions. Additionally, he ran for 148 yards and five rushing touchdowns. Before he joined the Terps, he had committed to Wake Forest, and his experience in the Big Ten will be a valuable asset for Moore and his team.
“I like, hopefully Michigan can land him and I think it’s exactly what Michigan needs,” said an insider. “Also, a veteran, experienced quarterback who can potentially come in and compete for the starting job and potentially start in the first few weeks of the season if Bryce Underwood isn’t ready.”
Bringing Edwards on board would be a smart move for Michigan, especially since they are currently facing issues with quarterback depth. If this situation is not addressed swiftly, it could lead to more significant problems.
