Why Stunned Notre Dame Must Pay Northern Illinois University $ 1.4 MILLION After Their Major Upset
The University of Notre Dame entered last Saturday’s game as 28-point favorites against Northern Illinois, with the highly ranked Fighting Irish expected to easily defeat the Huskies.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Northern Illinois kicker Kanon Woodill made a 35-yard field goal with just 31 seconds remaining, giving the Huskies a 16-14 lead. Subsequently, Northern Illinois blocked Notre Dame’s 62-yard field goal attempt, stunning the Fighting Irish at their home stadium in South Bend, Indiana.
To make matters worse, Notre Dame is now obligated to pay NIU $ 1.4 million.
This payment is due to a ‘buy-game contract’ established between the two schools for what is referred to as a ‘guarantee game’. Over the years, larger universities have compensated smaller schools significant amounts of money to secure what they anticipate will be an easy victory on their home turf.
