Notre Dame defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio is set to take over for the injured Rylie Mills in his first career start against the Georgia Bulldogs during the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
Fortunately for the Irish, this won’t be Rubio’s last game in the Blue and Gold. During the Sugar Bowl media day, the fourth-year player announced his intention to return to South Bend for his final season.
This is significant news, especially since Mills will likely be heading to the NFL, along with fellow starter Howard Cross III. Although Notre Dame has demonstrated impressive depth on the defensive line this fall, Rubio’s return will help solidify at least one position.
It’s expected that Donovan Hinish will take the other starting spot, but the Irish may also explore the transfer portal for additional depth. In any case, it’s excellent news that Rubio will be back for another season.
