North Carolina Tar Heels Again Announce Another Major News Of Cam Johnson After Recent Development

Former Tar Heels Basketball Star Traded Again To Title Contender

Former University of North Carolina basketball standout Cam Johnson is changing teams once again.

After previously being dealt from the Phoenix Suns to the Brooklyn Nets as part of the trade that sent Kevin Durant to Phoenix, Johnson is now headed to the Denver Nuggets.

On Monday, the Nets traded Johnson to Denver in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected 2032 first-round draft pick.

The trade was initially reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

There had been plenty of talk about the Nets parting ways with Cam Johnson, especially as the team enters full rebuild mode. Johnson is coming off a strong season, averaging 18.8 points per game. His $21 million salary for the 2026 season was a manageable contract for the Nuggets to take on, and a useful salary dump for Brooklyn. He’s set to earn $23 million in 2027.

Compared to Michael Porter Jr., Johnson is $12 million less expensive and shoots 39% from three-point range, making him a cost-effective upgrade for Denver.

The Nuggets, perennial title contenders and 2023 NBA champions, have struggled to maintain that dominance. Acquiring Johnson could be a turning point. His offensive skills can elevate the team’s performance without requiring him to carry the full scoring load—something he often had to do in Brooklyn.

In Denver, Johnson will likely thrive playing alongside stars Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. With Jokic often drawing double-teams, Johnson should find opportunities to score on open threes or smart cuts to the basket, where he’s efficient both in the paint and from mid-range.

This trade sends a clear message from Denver on day one of free agency—they’re serious about returning to championship form. Johnson’s presence should enhance their offense and positively impact the rest of the roster.

Meanwhile, the Nets re-signed another former UNC player, Day’Ron Sharpe, to a two-year, $12 million deal that includes a team option. Sharpe is coming off his best NBA season, averaging 7.9 points and 6.6 rebounds. Though he became an unrestricted free agent after the Nets declined to extend a qualifying offer, he opted not to test the open market. Brooklyn moved quickly to lock him in, recognizing his value before other teams could make a pitch.
