Overviewing UNC's Travis Burgess and His Dual-Threat Ability

The North Carolina Tar Heels have developed a reputation for attracting top-tier quarterback talent just look at former standouts Drake Maye and Sam Howell, both now playing in the NFL.

Continuing that trend, UNC secured another major commitment in its 2025 recruiting class with in-state 4-star quarterback Bryce Baker. Looking ahead, one of the Tar Heels’ most exciting 2026 prospects is another 4-star signal-caller: Travis Burgess.

Burgess kicked off his senior season in impressive fashion last Friday. Leading Grayson High School to a dominant 51-3 win over Suwanee Collins Hill, he accounted for four touchdowns—three passing and one rushing.

His touchdown throws covered 74, 32, and 23 yards, while his 41-yard scoring run contributed to his 96 yards on the ground. It was an electric start to what could be a standout final high school campaign.

As Burgess lights up Georgia defenses this fall, the Tar Heels will need to address their own quarterback situation—and fast.

UNC brings back its original 2024 starting quarterback, Max Johnson, though he spent the majority of last season—and much of the offseason—rehabbing a broken leg suffered in a game against Minnesota. To bolster the position, the Tar Heels added dual-threat lefty Gio Lopez from South Alabama via the transfer portal.

True freshman Bryce Baker may also see snaps this season, joining fellow freshmen Au’Tori Newkirk and Gary Merrill in a crowded quarterback room.

With Johnson set to depart after this season, the 2026 quarterback competition at UNC is shaping up to include Lopez, Baker, Newkirk, Merrill, and rising star Travis Burgess. And if Burgess keeps putting on performances like he did last Friday night, even Bill Belichick might be tempted to hand the reins to a true freshman.
