NHL recap: Mikko Rantanen scores a hat trick to lead Avs past Penguins

Mikko Rantanen scored a hat trick and added two assists as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-2 on Tuesday. Nathan MacKinnon contributed a goal and four assists, and Scott Wedgewood made 25 saves for the Avalanche, who extended their winning streak to three games and have won four of their last five.

For the Penguins, Cody Glass and Michael Bunting scored. Goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped 21 of 25 shots.

Rantanen sealed his hat trick with an empty-net goal in the third period after Jarry was pulled for an extra attacker.

Panthers 2, Kraken 1 (SO)

Aleksander Barkov scored in regulation and again in a shootout, helping the Florida Panthers win 2-1 against the Seattle Kraken. Sergei Bobrovsky made 17 saves in the game and stopped both of Seattle’s shootout attempts.

Chandler Stephenson scored for the Kraken, and Joey Daccord made 32 saves in his return after missing Seattle’s last game due to illness.

Maple Leafs 2, Devils 1 (OT)

Auston Matthews scored in overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. Matthews’ goal came at 2:51 of overtime, and it was his ninth of the season. Pontus Holmberg also scored for the Maple Leafs, while goaltender Anthony Stolarz stopped 38 shots.

Ondrej Palat scored for New Jersey, and Jacob Markstrom made 14 saves. Toronto extended its winning streak with the victory.

Blues 4, Canucks 3 (OT)

Dylan Holloway scored the game-winner in overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Holloway also recorded an assist. Robert Thomas had a goal and two assists for the Blues, who received goals from Jordan Kyrou and Zack Bolduc. Joel Hofer made 22 saves.

For the Canucks, Elias Pettersson had a goal and an assist, and Jake DeBrusk and Dakota Joshua also scored. Goaltender Thatcher Demko made 21 saves in his season debut.

Wild 5, Utah Hockey Club 4 (SO)

Matt Boldy scored the only goal in the shootout, giving the Minnesota Wild a 5-4 win over the Utah Hockey Club. Marcus Johansson had a goal and two assists, and Filip Gustavsson made 21 saves.

Utah’s Clayton Keller scored twice, and Kevin Stenlund and Juuso Valimaki each scored. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka stopped 34 of 38 shots in the game.

Oilers 2, Lightning 1

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and an assist, helping the Edmonton Oilers defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1. Connor McDavid also scored for the Oilers, who won their third straight game. Stuart Skinner made 21 saves for Edmonton.

Jake Guentzel scored for Tampa Bay, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 23 saves.

Kings 3, Islanders 1

The Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Islanders 3-1 with goals from Adrian Kempe, Kevin Fiala, and Mikey Anderson. Darcy Kuemper made 19 saves. The Kings extended their winning streak to six games.

Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, who saw their two-game winning streak end. Ilya Sorokin stopped 27 shots in the loss.

Hurricanes 3, Sharks 2

Jalen Chatfield scored the game-winner with 2:39 left to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks. Shayne Gostisbehere and Brent Burns also scored for the Hurricanes, while Pyotr Kochetkov made 21 saves.

Luke Kunin scored both goals for the Sharks, and Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves.

Flyers 5, Blue Jackets 3

Travis Konecny scored twice, and Morgan Frost added a goal and an assist as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3. Samuel Ersson made 15 saves for the win. Noah Cates and Owen Tippett also scored for Philadelphia.

Zach Werenski, Sean Monahan, and Kent Johnson scored for the Blue Jackets. Goaltender Juuse Saros stopped 24 shots.

Flames 4, Predators 3

Jonathan Huberdeau and Kevin Rooney each had a goal and an assist to lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-3 comeback win over the Nashville Predators. Nazem Kadri and Brayden Pachal also scored for Calgary, and Dan Vladar made 17 saves.

Jonathan Marchessault scored twice, and Tommy Novak also scored for the Predators, who have lost eight consecutive games.

Jets 8, Bruins 1

The Winnipeg Jets dominated the Boston Bruins with an 8-1 victory. Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each had three-point nights. Scheifele scored twice, and Connor contributed two assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves to earn his 18th win of the season.

David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins, who saw their four-game winning streak end. Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves.
