NFL insider reveals Washington Commanders’ stance on trade offers for No. 2 pick in new QB buzz

The Washington Commanders have maintained flexibility regarding the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. As the decision deadline approaches, it seems that the Commanders’ management is leaning towards a clear direction, either selecting a quarterback or engaging in a trade.

Washington has expressed readiness to trade away the No. 2 pick. While the team strongly requires a franchise quarterback, Washington has positioned itself strategically to capitalize on a suitable trade offer if one materializes.

Reports suggest that both the Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders have been investigating different methods to acquire a top-five pick. Although the Chicago Bears are expected to select Caleb Williams as the first overall pick, this leaves notable talents such as Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and J.J. McCarthy available.

Climbing up to the second pick allows any team to select their preferred quarterback from these three promising prospects, securing exceptional talent for the position. This is why the Commanders have been considering their options, even as the front office and coaching staff attended the pro days of McCarthy, Daniels, and Maye.

During an appearance on Sunday’s SportsCenter, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler mentioned that the Commanders have yet to finalize a decision regarding their No. 2 overall pick, as the current offers they have received are not deemed compelling enough by the Washington team to consider moving down.

Fowler stated, “They have been in touch with other teams, but so far, none of the offers have been impressive enough to convince Washington to relinquish their No. 2 spot. Therefore, they are opting to maintain their current position. I reached out to a source within the team, who indicated that no definitive plans have been made regarding the use of the second overall pick.” As previously noted, Washington sent a significant delegation to observe the pro days of both the North Carolina Tar Heels and LSU Tigers last week. Following the in-person evaluations of the quarterbacks, there appears to be emerging speculation regarding the favored choice for the second overall selection.

Fowler specifically mentioned that there is growing talk around Jayden Daniels as the potential pick in April, dispelling earlier speculations suggesting McCarthy as the likely No. 2 pick. Although the draft process is still in its early stages and the Commanders’ draft board will not be finalized for a few more weeks, the prevailing inclination within the team at present is to retain the No. 2 pick and draft Daniels.
