NFL Insider claims Dallas Cowboys begin talks to re-sign former fan favorite as free agent

On the day of the NFL Draft, rumors suggest that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might be considering bringing back a well-known player from the past.

The whirlwind of free agency may have left Dallas Cowboys supporters feeling as though it passed by unnoticed, given the team’s minimal activity. America’s Team has brought in just two external free agents, while witnessing the departure of several well-known players.Among the new signings for the Cowboys are linebacker Erik Kendricks and running back Royce Freeman, who have joined a Cowboys roster that has seen significant changes.

Dallas Cowboys poised to enhance their lineup with rookie starters.

Today marks the beginning of the Cowboys’ efforts to salvage their offseason. The NFL Draft has been identified by the Jones family as the primary method to strengthen and shape their roster.

In an effort to manage their finances, the Dallas Cowboys are turning to cost-effective rookies while facing the challenge of accommodating lucrative contracts for key players.Last month, Dallas Cowboys reporter Michael Gehlken hinted at the possibility of Ezekiel Elliott making a return, a development that is now potentially progressing as Elliott engages in discussions with the team’s front office about a deal that could bring him back to the Cowboys.

Ezekiel Elliott is reportedly in talks with the Cowboys front office about a potential deal that could see him return to the team after spending a season away.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport revealed that the Cowboys have initiated discussions with their former star player and his representative. The report emphasized that while no agreement had been reached, both parties were actively involved in negotiations.
If Ezekiel Elliott were to make a comeback to the Cowboys, he would join a running back group that has been significantly depleted. Additionally, both Elliott and Royce Freeman are primarily utilized as short-yardage and goal-line rushers.
This suggests that their addition to the Cowboys’ roster would provide a boost in those specific situations, potentially improving the team’s performance in those critical moments. The Cowboys’ running back situation has been a point of concern for the team, and the potential return of Elliott could help address those concerns.

Ezekiel Elliott retains his agility and would offer mentorship to a rookie player, leveraging his experience and skills to guide and support a newcomer in the team.

In the latter part of the 2023 season, Ezekiel Elliott, the NFL’s top rusher in 2016, assumed a more significant role with the New England Patriots following an injury to starter Rhamondre Stevenson. Elliott, who was 28 years old at the time, rushed for 140 scrimmage yards and scored a touchdown in week 14, showcasing his continued prowess on the field. Should Elliott join the Cowboys, he would likely take on the role of second-string running back, with the rookie that the franchise is targeting serving as the third-string option.
The Cowboys have reportedly set their sights on Texas rusher Johnathon Brooks, and Elliott could potentially serve as a valuable mentor to the young player. However, any further discussions about a potential deal between Elliott and the Cowboys will likely be put on hold until after the NFL Draft.
