NFL Announces Punishment on Chiefs Veteran Tershawn Wharton for Smacking Opponent

The Kansas City Chiefs improved to 5-0 with their “Monday Night Football” win over the New Orleans Saints last week. However, not all players in red and white came away unscathed. Chiefs’ fifth-year defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who recorded his first full sack of the season in the 26-13 victory, found himself in some trouble after an incident with Saints starting offensive lineman Lucas Patrick.

After a play, Wharton smacked Patrick across the facemask, which sent his head jerking back. According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, Wharton’s actions led to a fine. Pelissero reported on X that “The NFL fined #Chiefs DT Tershawn Wharton $ 11,817 for unnecessary roughness – smacking #Saints OL Lucas Patrick in the facemask last week.”

The 26-year-old Wharton wrapped up the game with three tackles (including one for a loss) and the sack, raising his season total to 1.5 sacks. His career-high is 2.0 sacks, a mark he last hit in 2023.

Originally signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, Wharton is currently on his second consecutive one-year contract, having signed a $ 2.74 million deal back in March. While the Chiefs are on a bye this week, they’ll be back in action in Week 7 for an exciting road matchup against the San Francisco 49ers
