New Mexico Sends Strong Message to Rick Pitino’s Son After Unexpected Exit
Rick Pitino and St. John’s made it to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed after an outstanding season in the Big East. Unfortunately, his team faced an upset in the round of 32, losing to John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Meanwhile, Rick’s son, Richard Pitino, guided New Mexico to the tournament as well, but the Lobos also experienced a round of 32 defeat against Michigan State. At the end of the season, Richard Pitino took a position as the head coach at Xavier, leaving New Mexico after leading the Lobos from 2021 to 2025. After his exit, New Mexico’s Director of Athletics, Fernando Lovo, expressed his appreciation for Richard Pitino and shared an uplifting message for the Lobos fans.
For the last twenty years, Richard Pitino has been making his way up the ranks in college basketball, following the path laid by his father. Currently the head coach at Xavier, Richard has also held positions at Minnesota, Florida International University, Louisville, Florida, Northeastern, and Charleston.

Richard Pitino and Rick Pitino are set to face off against each other in the Big East, with Richard now coaching at Xavier. They will be competing as Xavier takes on Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Red Storm, who emerged victorious in this season’s Big East Tournament.
