New DB coach D.K. McDonald hitting it off with KU defense through first week of spring football

Among the fresh faces present during Kansas’ recent spring practices was D.K. McDonald, the newly appointed co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. With 22 years of coaching experience and arriving from Philadelphia, McDonald is already leaving a positive impact on a defense eager to enhance their performance in the upcoming season.

Having previously served as a pass-game coordinator at Iowa State and contributing to the Philadelphia Eagles’ journey to the 2022 Super Bowl, McDonald expressed optimism about the defensive groundwork being established at KU. He particularly highlighted the contributions of returning cornerbacks Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson, likening them to additional coaches on the field for their mentorship of younger players.

McDonald also commended true freshman cornerback Jalen Todd, praising his enthusiastic approach to the game and noting his progress within the defensive back unit. While acknowledging areas for improvement such as pad level and focus, McDonald emphasized the importance of increasing Todd’s football IQ to enhance his overall performance.

Just one week into spring training, it appears that McDonald’s coaching expertise is starting to make an impact on the defense.

Dotson acknowledged that the sudden departure of former coach Jordan Peterson was surprising, but he is adapting well to McDonald’s direct and business-focused approach. Dotson is particularly impressed by McDonald’s experience in the NFL and the valuable conversations he has had with older Jayhawks looking towards professional football careers.

Expressing admiration for McDonald’s background, Dotson mentioned that he aims to reach the same level of success and is eager to learn from him. McDonald officially joined Lance Leipold’s coaching staff in February and transitioned back into the competitive environment of the Big 12 Conference at KU.

Looking back on the week of spring practices, McDonald emphasized his appreciation for the hard work and leadership displayed by the experienced players on the team.

He highlighted the commitment and teamwork of the veterans, noting their dedication not only to their own improvement but also to lifting up their teammates and building a lasting legacy for the program.
