Nebraska loses key veteran wide receiver to serious knee injury
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule confirmed Monday that one of the Huskers’ veteran wide receivers will miss the rest of the year after injuring a knee against Cincinnati.
Janiran Bonner left Thursday’s win over the Bearcats in the fourth quarter after rushing for a gain of a yard two plays before the Dane Key touchdown. Bonner quickly popped up and hobbled to the sidelines, but was seen after the game on crutches with a significant wrap on his leg.
“It’s a tremendous loss on the field. He’s a great football player,” said Rhule, pointing out beyond his versatility on offense he was a key member of special teams units. “Selfless. Great teammate. I’m sure he will continue to inspire his teammates, though, with his attitude. Just know how much he means to everybody. He doesn’t mean a lot to us because he’s a good player, he means a lot to us because of who he is. So we’ll rally around him and watch him come back better than ever.”
Bonner had one catch for four yards in the game and added two carries for four yards in the win over Cincinnati.
Bonner had been voted as a single-digit recipient by his teammates prior to the start of the season.
”Physical, hard work, does everything you ask him to do,” Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen said previously of Bonner. “Swiss Army knife so to speak. He can flex out and run any routes that we want him to do. We can move him in and use him in the run game as well. He’s going to do a lot. He’s a great special teams player. He’s a great leader. Doesn’t say a word. Just gets out there and plays his tail off with extreme physicality just every single play. So he’s going to play a lot. You’re going to see No. 4 out there thumping people and running routes and making plays as well.”
